Indivisible Sisters took to the streets with the warnings of the Signs of Fascism May 30, and posted this great video.
Their Facebook posting of this event drew a barrage of comments from a widespread hatch of MAGA. Among the respondents’ points of confusion were:
- the varied scope of fascism itself;
- how it and authoritarianism in general don’t usually arise instantly, but during periods when the freedom to comment and/or protest remains extant; and
- the general fog of right-wing conspiracy theories about how and why progressive demonstrations occur.
For example, “The thought of bashing in the head of a left wing radical, paid, treasonous protester is so satisfying,” posted Mike Russell of Mobile, Alabama. This and many similar responses illustrate how fascism essentially grows by popular, albeit unhinged, support within a democracy.
Unwittingly and ironically, Russell and other thugs may yet help spread the Signs of Fascism movement by exemplifying the threat so plainly.
“Taking the Signs of Fascism to the Streets” (Feb. 17) provides a full description of this demonstration movement and history. See also our other posts of Signs of Fascism events by Oregon groups.
