Made to Order: Trump Regime Packs Deportation Courts

According to reporting from The Washington Post, more than 100 immigration judges have been fired or pushed out since Donald Trump took office, with over 140 new judges brought in to replace them. Many of these new hires have little or no background in immigration law, and are receiving shorter training than judges did in the past.

The goal is clear: reduce a massive backlog of more than 3 million cases and support a broader push to significantly increase deportations.

But former judges and legal experts say the changes could come at a cost. Some worry the administration is replacing independent judges with people more aligned with its enforcement goalsโ€”creating pressure to rule in favor of deportation.

At the same time, new policies are making it harder for immigrants to win their cases. Judges are being encouraged to grant asylum less often, and recent data shows approvals have dropped sharply while rejections have surged.

There are also concerns about how quickly new judges are being brought in. Some are being offered high salaries, bonuses, and flexible schedulesโ€”including part-time rolesโ€”raising questions about consistency and experience on the bench.

Supporters of the changes say the system needs to move faster and enforce the law more consistently. But critics argue that speed and volume could undermine fairnessโ€”especially in cases where people are seeking protection from violence or persecution.

At its core, this debate is about something bigger than immigration policy: itโ€™s about whether the courts deciding who can stay in the U.S. are being shaped for efficiency, enforcement or impartial justice.
