The Man Behind the Curtain: Miller’s Machinations

According to Ashley Parker, Michael Scherer, and Nick Miroff´s recent exposé in The Atlantic, Stephen Miller doesn’t run White House meetings like a typical policy adviser. He runs them like a war room.

Every morning at 10 a.m.–even on Saturdays–he gets senior officials on the phone and demands results, not debate. People on the calls describe them as tense and unforgiving. Miller isn’t interested in consensus; he wants action.

As Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Miller relentlessly pushes the president’s agenda, especially mass deportations. He pressures agencies like ICE, DHS, the FBI, and the Pentagon for constant updates and publicly calls out officials he thinks are falling short. He has pushed ICE to aim for as many as 3,000 arrests a day and closely tracks hiring, detention space, deportation flights, and border crossings.

Within Trump’s inner circle, Miller is known as dogmatic and intense, sometimes advocating ideas others see as too extreme. But in Trump’s second term, his influence has only grown. Allies often describe him as a “prime minister,” involved not just in immigration but also national security, foreign policy, and domestic enforcement. When Trump wants something done, Miller is usually the one he turns to.

Miller frames politics as an existential struggle, especially around immigration, and shows little interest in moderating his views. Critics see him as authoritarian; supporters see him as effective and disciplined. Either way, he has become one of the most powerful figures shaping how Trump’s presidency operates.

The above summarizes The Atlantic‘s Jan. 7, 2026 article “The Wrath of Stephen Miller: The man who turns President Trump’s most incendiary impulses into policy” by Ashley Parker, Michael Scherer, and Nick Miroff.
