Portland District 2 Neighbors Indivisible has launched an action campaign to use the IRS’s new $6000 senior tax deduction to reduce harm done by the Budget Reconciliation Act of 2025 (OBBBA, which Trump and his allies refer to as “One Big Beautiful Bill.”).
The campaign “Take THIS Bait — But Don’t Get Hooked” gives you–regardless of your age or your income level–three actions that can support your values and lessen the harm of the OBBBA.
1. Educate
Learn about and explain to others the damage OBBBA is doing, and what the $6000
deduction is and its limits. For more information about OBBBA, click here.
More than 50% of seniors owe no income tax and will not benefit from the deduction.
No one will get a gift of $6000. Eligible seniors could see a tax savings of up to $600 per
senior in their household. For more information about the senior deduction, click here.
2. Spread the Word
Not everyone will qualify for the deduction. However, everyone can share this
information:
- with friends/family who can take action and then spread the word,
- with organizations they support to use as a fundraising tool, and
- through print and social media.
3. Donate What You Can, Where It Supports Your Values
Take THIS Bait–Go ahead, use the new senior deduction to reduce your taxable
income.
But Don’t Get Hooked–Donate what you can of your tax savings to organizations that
are working to help those who need it most, or to advocacy groups or candidates that
are working for social justice or political change. You can be part of raising millions of
dollars to help counter the impact of OBBBA!
See the Portland District 2 Neighbors Indivisible website for more information about the “Take THIS Bait — But Don’t Get Hooked” campaign, including links to more information about the senior deduction and the true impoct of the OBBBA, and even email templates and social media graphics to help spread this information campaign.
