Say No as an Act of Self Compassion

In a time when there is constant input and demand for our attention, it’s easy to feel like we need to stay engaged with everything at all times. But our capacity is not unlimited, and it’s okay to recognize that.

Saying not right now—to another article, another conversation, or another request—is a form of self-compassion. It allows you to conserve your energy for the most essential parts of your life.

Take a good look at what has brought you the most joy in the last month and ask yourself if you’re giving yourself those experiences that truly feed your body and soul. It could be a well prepared meal or time with your favorite people.

Whatever it is for you, be firm about saying “no” to obligations and responsibilities that keep you away from what really matters most.

From that more centered place, you’re able to think more clearly, care more sustainably, and engage with life in a way that is both joyful and sustainable.
