Out of the Bondi Pan, Into the Blanche Fire…

Just when we thought replacing Pam Bondi was a good thing, along comes Todd Blanche.

This morning, confirmation hearings began for former Donald Trump personal defense attorney, Todd Blanche.  The Senate’s confirmation of Todd Blanche as Attorney General could very well be a defining test of Congress’s willingness to act independently of President Trump.

Before Blanche can receive a full Senate vote, the Senate Judiciary Committee must approve his nomination. Despite the recent and unexpected death of Senator Lindsey Graham, the committee still appears likely to advance Blanche by a narrow party-line vote.

Many believe that Republican senators already have ample evidence to reject the nomination, given Blanche’s conduct while serving as acting Attorney General, which include:

  • Approval of a controversial $1.776 billion presidential fund
  • Mishandling investigations related to Jeffrey Epstein
  • Pursuing politically motivated investigations of Trump’s critics
  • Failure to intervene in alleged constitutional violations involving immigration enforcement

It appears that Blanche has prioritized loyalty to President Trump over the Justice Department’s traditional independence and impartial enforcement of the law.

There is also the unusually strong, and unprecedented, opposition from more than 1,200 former Justice Department officials, who signed a letter urging senators to reject Blanche’s nomination, causing widespread concern about Blanche’s qualifications and leadership.

That’s not all for this week. There are several other major legal developments, including:

  • Litigation over Justice Department subpoenas to journalists
  • Disputes involving state election administration
  • Ongoing immigration enforcement cases

So buckle up, Buttercup. This week’s likely to be a bumpy ride along the path of democracy.
