Oregon Coast Indivisible Alliance Builds Ties with Retreat

Representatives from nine Indivisible groups up and down the Oregon coast gathered for a retreat May 6-7 to kick off the Oregon Coast Indivisible Alliance (OCIA):

  • Dunes City Indivisible
  • Florence Indivisible
  • Indivisible of Coos County
  • Indivisible Lincoln County
  • Indivisible North Coast Oregon
  • Indivisible Reedsport
  • Indivisible Tillamook County Action
  • Indivisible Waves
  • Pacific County Indivisible

OCIA is not limited to the groups whose members made it to the retreat. Other groups so far include Bandon Protects Democracy – Indivisible, Indivisible Brookings Oregon, Indivisible Newport, Indivisible North Coast Action, Indivisible North Curry County, North County Resistance, and Pacific County Indivisible (Long Beach WA).

This alliance has its roots in prior events and communications between the groups involved. They are interested in organizing information, joining voices, and coordinating resources when a coalition can achieve a greater impact than a local group. Anti-ICE demonstrations and Signs of Fascism events are past examples of this coordination between the groups.

The setting of the retreat was a large meeting room with a beautiful view of the Siuslaw River across from Florence, at a Best Western Hotel where several of the 16 attendees stayed for the event. Shar Walbaum of Indivisible Lincoln City and Susan Williams of Dunes City Indivisible coordinated the event with participants from five of the groups leading various sessions and activities.

In brainstorming sessions, attendees expressed interest in expanding information shared online (e.g. via websites and YouTube), fundraising endeavors, recruitment, social events, and other avenues of mutual support.
