Not So Fast, Democrats: Midterms Are Not in the Bag

Despite favorable headlines for Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterms, this evaluation by John B. Judis puts forth that the Democrats’ path to winning Congress is much tougher than it appears.

Democrats have strong opportunities in several Republican-held Senate races — especially in Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, Iowa, Alaska, Nebraska, and Maine — helped by President Trump’s low approval ratings and energized Democratic turnout. However, structural advantages still favor Republicans.ย

The biggest obstacles are political geography and redistricting.

Republicans’ dominance in many state legislatures has allowed them to redraw House districts in ways that could add 10โ€“14 seats, making it significantly harder for Democrats to reclaim the House.

In the Senate, rural, less-populated states — which receive equal representation regardless of population — continue to lean heavily Republican, limiting Democrats’ opportunities even in a favorable political climate.ย

The author concludes that Democrats could still win the House, and possibly the Senate, if the election centers on Trump’s record and the economy. But lasting success will require rebuilding state parties, competing more effectively in rural America, and addressing structural disadvantages like redistricting. Without those changes, any Democratic gains may prove temporary rather than the beginning of a durable political realignment.
