New Oregon Laws Go Into Effect This Week

More than 50 new Oregon laws take effect Friday, with many aimed at protecting residents from Trump administration policies and easing cost-of-living pressures.

The laws strengthen privacy and labor protections for immigrants, limit landlord and employer use of immigration status, protect worker rights, and ensure domestic workers receive minimum wage.

Other measures address affordability by expanding housing options, curbing high-interest lending and ticket scams, allowing more renter payment choices, and helping homeowners make wildfire-safety improvements.

Examples

  • Data safety:ย Senate Bill 1587ย to prevent state agencies from supplying information on Oregonians to data brokers who would hand that data to federal immigration enforcement agencies.
  • Hospital boundaries:ย Senate Bill 1570ย responds to the problem of ICE nabbing patients while they seek care in hospitals.
  • Employer retaliation:ย House Bill 4111ย addresses the problem of employers who threaten to call federal immigration authorities on employees as retaliation for raising concerns about working conditions.
  • Landlord regulation:ย House Bill 4123ย prevents landlords from disclosing tenantsโ€™ immigration status and other personal information.
  • Labor protections:ย Senate Bill 1518ย will require that domestic and homecare workers earn at least minimum wage, which came in response to the Trump administrationโ€™s effort last year to undo a federal rule that would ensure these employees receive such pay.
  • Child welfare:ย House Bill 4013, ensures Oregonโ€™s child welfare protections are not weakened by changes to federal child labor laws.
  • Renter payments:ย Senate Bill 1523ย will require that tenants get reasonable alternatives to paying rent via online portals, which can collect personal information and come with fees.
  • Fire safety for homes:ย Senate Bill 1551ย keeps HOAs from impeding owners making fire safety improvements to their homes, such as adding fire-proof siding and roofing, or defensible landscaping.
  • Housing:ย Senate Bill 1576ย allows the state’s Consumer and Business Services to adopt fair access to housing rules that go beyond federal accessibility regulations. House Bill 4082 allows Oregon cities to widen urban growth boundaries for housing developments.
  • Loaning rules:ย Senate Bill 1567ย creates low-interest loans for mixed-income housing production in Oregon, andย House Bill 4116ย eliminates โ€œloopholesโ€ in Oregon law that allowed lenders to charge huge interest rates.
  • Ticket sales:ย House Bill 4024ย addresses inflated ticket prices and vendors selling tickets they donโ€™t have on misleading websites.

Democrats say the laws protect Oregonians and working families, while Republicans argue they divert attention from economic growth, public safety, and education.
