Make Red Hats Great Again

Laurie Caplan of Indivisible North Coast Oregon shared this pattern that was passed to her by a local activist who creates the “Red Hat of Resistance” for a show of solidarity with the folks in Minneapolis and everywhere ICE has created terror in the streets.

Some Indivisibles create extras for fellow resisters who can’t knit. If you know your way around a pair of needles and knitting instructions, you might enjoy doing the same as a self care exercise! Laurie also shared the PDF file for this.

Pattern:

This chunky hat is worked in the round from the brim to tip, and knits up very quickly, making it easy to make many in a short time. I recommend starting with the German-twisted cast on to keep the hat snug while giving a little bit of stretch. I used the magic loop method to knit this hat.

Cast on and cuff:

  • Cast on (36) 44 stitches onto circular or double-pointed needles and join in the round. Be careful not to twist stitches. PM at the beginning of the round.
  • Work rounds 1-(5)6 in K1P1 ribbing, about (1.75โ€) 2โ€.
  • Work (8) 15 rounds of stockinette. The hat should measure (4.25โ€) 6โ€ from the cast-on edge.

Setting up for decreases:

  • Round (14)21: Knit (18) 22, PM, knit to end of round.

Decreases:

  • Round 1: *K1, SSK, knit to 3 stitches before marker, K2tog, K1*, SM, repeat from *to* once more. 4 stitches have been decreased.
  • Round 2: Knit around.
  • Repeat these two rows until there are 8 stitches left on needles.

Last two rounds:

  • K2tog around (4 stitches remaining).
  • K2, K2tog (3 stitches remaining).
  • Work (2โ€) 3โ€ of i-cord, then knit all three stitches together and leave a long tail to attach a tassel.

Abbreviations:

  • K = knit
  • P = purl
  • K2tog = knit 2 stitches together (right leaning decrease)
  • SSK = slip, slip, knit (left leaning decrease)
  • PM = place marker
