ICE ‘Ramping Up’ in Rogue Valley

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity is reportedly “ramping up” in the Rogue Valley.

Help recent ICE detainees and their families through GoFundMe:

  • Omar: taken June 14 in Medford.
  • Esteban: taken recently in Grants Pass.
  • Juana: taken recently in Grants Pass.

Recent ICE activity in southern Oregon goes beyond the May 30 article we summarize here.

Several people have been “taken” in June in Grants Pass, Central Point, and Phoenix, according to Rogue Valley Migra Watch.

Ashland.news reported the following shared by community organizer Allie Rosenbluth with Rogue Valley Migra Watch, a volunteer organization that tracks ICE activity in the region:

  • ICE snatched six people from public places May 19-29. It is unknown whether all of the individuals were targeted for prior convictions or removal orders, as with previous ICE arrests in Oregon.
  • This recent activity is an “escalation” comparable to last July, when 17 individuals in Medford were detained by ICE.
  • ICE activity is on the move in south Medford in unmarked vehicles such as a maroon Jeep Cherokee and a silver Dodge Durango.
  • Near Hawthorne Park in Medford on May 28, ICE agents tackled an individual to the ground, an incident recorded on video and posted on Facebook.
  • Another arrest in Medford, on May 29, was reported by Migra Watch.
  • Three detentions were reported last week outside of Jackson County Circuit Court in Medford May 19-21. This is the first time the common ICE tactic of targeting people outside of a courthouse has been confirmed in the Rogue Valley, according to Rosenbluth.
  • ICE checked the immigration status of landscape work crews outside of Rogue River May 23 and 25, resulting in one detention.
  • Witnesses reported seeing ICE vehicles pull someone over in Grants Pass May 27, only to leave without making an arrest after the driver yelled for help, and a bystander called police.

As shared by Ashland.news, Migra Watch says those who are concerned about their immigration status should:

Reported by Migra Watch May 27: Call PIRC at 888-622-1510 if you see this ICE vehicle: black Ford Exposition, with Oregon license plate 448-JGH. A maroon Jeep with no plates and a silver Dodge Durango have also been reported by the group.
  • Call 541-840-9669 to see if you qualify for free legal assistance through Equity Corps of Oregon (ECO) — before you get detained.
  • Call Coalición Fortaleza at 541-236-5605 for help to make a family and asset plan with free bilingual notaries.
  • Message Rogue Valley Migra Watch on Facebook or Instagram, and call the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) rapid response hotline immediately at 888-622-1510, if you encounter ICE.
  • Tell friends or bystanders to film or photograph the interaction. They can call the above number also.
  • If you have to appear in court, ask friends to accompany you. Or, use Facebook or Instagram messaging to request Rogue Valley Migra Watch volunteers to be outside Court.
