The rights of all transgender citizens warrant protection, while young trans people are especially vulnerable to the dangers of rejection, abuse, and suicide.
Studies such as this one conducted by the Trevor Project show that increases in suicide attempts among young trans people correlated with state-level laws against transgender rights in recent years.
Disturbingly, other data such as this recent poll from the Pew Research Center suggests that despite some progress this century, more Americans favor restrictions against trans people recently than in previous years.
In other words, we are headed in the wrong direction both as a nation of equal rights, and as a compassionate nation.
