A new Reuters/Ipsos poll of more than 4,500 Americans finds President Donald Trump facing significant political headwinds. Overall, 35% approve of his job performance while 63% disapprove. His strongest issues are immigration and crime, each with 39% approval. But approval drops to just 29% on the economy and Iran, and further plummets to just 21–22% on inflation and cost of living. Looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, Democrats hold a narrow edge on the generic congressional ballot, 35% to 31%, while 15% remain undecided and another 14% say they do not plan to vote. Nearly half of respondents say the cost of living will be their top voting issue, with healthcare and housing leading the list of everyday expenses they want Congress to address. [p. 10]
The survey also found widespread public cynicism. Eighty percent say the quality of a candidate matters more than party, yet 76% believe voters often have to choose the “lesser of two evils.” [p. 13] Three-quarters say the Epstein files have lowered their trust in political and business leaders, and 84% believe they show that powerful people are rarely held accountable [p. 19].
