The holiday season is upon us and there is a reminder that two things can be true at the same time. These thoughts are described in a Substack by Paul T. Shattuck, MSW, PhD, "Am I still in the Resistance if I am celebrating the Holidays?"   Choosing not to be "captured by either—is exactly the position authoritarianism can’t script a response to. They win if you’re perpetually activated. They win if you’re fully normalized. They don’t know what to do with someone who’s awake, alive, and still buying the cranberries."

In the escalation of ICE raids, global tensions, and the multitude of authoritarian behaviors happening, we are challenged to move forward, through the holidays - while at the same time making our voices heard. Whether it is the economic blackout, Migra watch training, phone banking, or participating in the multitude of upcoming events and actions, there are many ways to be engaged - awake, alive and yet still buying the cranberries!

Good News - the Coast Guard Helicopter will be returning! In the wake of the push back on a potential ICE detention center in Newport, there was a quickly organized city council meeting attended by over 800 people and a Town Hall by Senator Ron Wyden. At the same time, there were questions about the relocation of the Coast Guard Search and Rescue helicopter resulting in the county and the Newport-based nonprofit, the Fishermen’s Wives, filing a lawsuit followed by another lawsuit filed by the State of Oregon by Attorney General Dan Rayfield. On Monday night November 24, OPB reports that U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken has ruled that the Coast Guard helicopter must return to Newport with a temporary order in effect for 14 days. Meanwhile the pushback against locating an ICE detention center in Newport must continue! Many communities in Oregon are experiencing escalating ICE activity and some cities are declaring a state of emergency.
